Your digital bookshelf on a device like the Kindle Colorsoft becomes almost as colorful as the ones you have at home, and browsing through a sea of new titles on the shop side becomes much more engaging than a sea of black-and-white. It's a great purchase if you read any books that might have illustrations on the pages, or if you like color highlights.Amazon finally came out with color Kindles starting last year, but with the close-to-$300 price tag, we weren't as impressed as we should have been. But right now, during Black Friday, you can get the colorful Kindle Colorsoft for almost as cheap as the black-and-white Kindle Paperwhite. While there are a ton of Kindle deals you can shop right now, this is easily the biggest one not to miss.Photograph: Nena FarrellPhotograph: Nena FarrellCourtesy of AmazonChevronChevronAmazonKindle Colorsoft and Colorsoft Signature Edition$280 $230 (18% off) Amazon (Colorsoft Signature Edition)$250 $170 (32% off) Amazon (Colorsoft)The Best Deals on Kindle, Echo, and Fire DevicesBlack Friday sales for Amazon gadgets are still live this weekend. Here are the best deals on Echo speakers, Fire TVs, and Kindles.By Nena Farrell There are two versions of the Colorsoft: The base model that came out this summer, and the Signature model that came out last year. Both are on sale right now. Both also did well in our tests (though the Signature is the one that had issues with yellow bars appearing on the bottom of the devices last year) and are mostly similar, but have a few key differences. The Signature Edition has an auto-adjusting warm light, while the basic Colorsoft has a warm light you can manually adjust. You'll get twice as much storage on the Signature, too, with 32 GB over 16 GB, and the Signature can be wirelessly charged.Other than those three features, though, both have the same 7-inch screen and resolution of 300 pixels-per-inch (or ppi) for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. They're both waterproof, too. My only complaint is that the Dark Mode no longer turns menu pages dark, and doesn't work on downloaded content like AZW3 documents (which are a special ebook style formatted specifically for Kindles).Overall, it's a great e-reader, just pricey, especially since you aren't getting things like page-turner buttons or the ability to double as a digital notebook like you can with Kobo's colorful e-readers. If you're a Kindle enthusiast, though, this is truly the best time to buy.More Kindle DealsKindle Colorsoft Kids for $170 ($80 Off)Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) for $125 ($35 Off)Kindle Scribe (2nd Generation) for $280 ($120 Off)Kindle (11th Generation) for $80 ($30 Off)Power up with unlimited access to WIRED. The Kindle Colorsoft e-reader is currently experiencing a significant price reduction as part of Black Friday 2025 promotions, offering a notable discount compared to its standard retail price. This sale presents a compelling opportunity for consumers interested in a color e-reader experience, particularly those who value the visual appeal of illustrations or color highlights within their reading material. Nena Farrell, a writer and reviewer at WIRED, highlights this as a key moment to purchase the device, considering its previously high price point. The Colorsoft model, released last year, represents Amazon’s entry into the market for color e-readers. It offers two variations: a standard model and a Signature Edition. Both share core features, including a 7-inch color display with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. Key differences include the Signature Edition’s auto-adjusting warm light, 32GB of storage (double that of the base model), and wireless charging capabilities. However, Farrell notes a drawback: the Dark Mode functionality is limited, not fully darkening menu pages and not supporting downloaded content in formats like AZW3. Despite these limitations, the e-reader boasts waterproof design and retains a similar screen size and resolution for black-and-white reading. The device's price, previously around $280, has been reduced to approximately $230 during this Black Friday sale. This discount makes it a more accessible option for consumers not solely reliant on color display features. The signature edition is currently discounted to $170 and $170 for the base model. The Colorsoft’s market value and consumer appeal highlight the demand for color e-readers and the ongoing innovation within the digital reading landscape. The sale underscores that while the device has some shortcomings, like the limitations of the Dark Mode and the lack of page-turner buttons or notebook functionality, it remains a worthwhile purchase for color e-reader enthusiasts. The deal specifically makes the Colorsoft a strong contender for consumers seeking an affordable entry point into the world of color e-reading. |
