John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, is stepping down from his role after a significant tenure with the company, transitioning into an advisory position before retiring in the spring of 2026. This shift underscores Apple’s ongoing strategic realignment within its artificial intelligence efforts. The move is accompanied by the arrival of Amar Subramanya as vice president of AI, reporting directly to Craig Federighi. Subramanya, a renowned AI researcher, brings considerable experience from Microsoft and Google, most recently as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft, and previously as head of engineering for Google’s Gemini Assistant. His expertise will be pivotal in guiding Apple’s work across critical areas including Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and the establishment of robust AI safety and evaluation protocols. The transition reflects a deliberate restructuring within Apple’s AI organization. Following Giannandrea’s departure, the leadership responsibilities will be shared by Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue, aligning their respective organizations with the broader AI strategy. This redistribution of responsibility is intended to enhance operational efficiency and streamline the development process. Throughout his time at Apple, Giannandrea played a key role in shaping the company’s approach to AI and machine learning. He spearheaded the construction of a world-class team dedicated to developing and deploying AI technologies, which currently oversee projects encompassing Apple Foundation Models, Search and Knowledge, Machine Learning Research, and AI Infrastructure. This team's contributions are central to Apple’s ambition to deliver intelligent, trusted, and deeply personal user experiences. Amar Subramanya’s arrival significantly strengthens Apple’s AI capabilities, particularly given his background. His previous roles at Microsoft and Google, including his leadership at Google’s Gemini Assistant project, provide him with invaluable insight into both the research and practical application of AI. His focus on AI safety and evaluation will be critical as Apple continues to integrate AI into its products and services. This leadership movement, coupled with the expanded oversight Craig Federighi will provide, positions Apple to aggressively pursue innovation and accelerate the development of its AI technologies. The collective expertise of Giannandrea (during his advisory period), Federighi, and Subramanya— alongside a reinforced leadership team— is poised to drive Apple’s future advancements in AI, further solidifying its commitment to delivering exceptional and deeply personal user experiences. The changes signal a renewed focus on leveraging AI to shape the future of Apple’s product ecosystem. |
