Microsoft PowerToys has released version 0.97, introducing a new mouse utility called CursorWrap designed to significantly improve the multi-monitor experience. A primary focus of this update is the CursorWrap tool, which “teleports” the mouse pointer to the opposite edge of active monitors, eliminating the need for users to manually drag the cursor across large screen distances. This addresses a common frustration for individuals utilizing multiple displays. Senior Product Manager Niels Laute noted, “If you use multiple monitors and are tired of dragging your mouse all the way across the screen, CursorWrap is here to help.” The tool functions by wrapping the cursor around the edges of the displays, adapting to the logical monitor layout. Specifically, for a single-monitor device, the cursor is wrapped for the top/bottom and left/right edges; however, for multi-monitor setups, the cursor wraps on the top/bottom, left/right of the displays, conforming to the logical display arrangement. Beyond CursorWrap, a substantial amount of development has been dedicated to enhancing the Command Palette, a PowerToys quick launcher utility accessible via the Win+Alt+Space keyboard shortcut. This update incorporates several requested features, including the ability to control other PowerToys directly from within Command Palette. Users can now toggle FancyZones layouts, activate the color picker, and turn on Light Switch, all without navigating to separate settings windows. Furthermore, PowerToys 0.97 integrates the Peek file preview utility into the Command Palette. This allows users to preview files and folders without leaving the launcher’s interface. The PowerToys team has also added a new Personalization page (within the Command Palette Settings under the Personalization menu) which empowers users to customize the Command Palette’s appearance with background images and color tinting options. Additional Command Palette improvements include a built-in Remote Desktop extension for quick access to remote desktop connections, and the capability to select custom search engines within the Web Search extension settings. The origins of Microsoft PowerToys date back to the Windows 95 era, where it initially started as a collection of small, freeware tools created by Windows developers as personal projects. Microsoft revived the toolset in 2019 as an open-source utility pack, aiming to streamline tasks that previously required third-party tools. Currently, PowerToys is available through the Microsoft Store or the official GitHub repository, which also provides a comprehensive changelog detailing all versions. |
