He joined The Verge in 2019 after nearly two years at Techmeme.Xbox showed off new footage of its Fable reboot during its Developer Direct on Thursday and announced that the game is set to launch this autumn for Xbox, PC, and PS5.The new Fable is an open-world action RPG. In addition to letting you customize your character and your combat skills, you can also do not-heroic things like build a house (or many) and romance and marry a villager (or many). Characters in the game will react to how you’ve treated them or your reputation — if you’ve evicted a villager from one of your houses, they might greet you with disdain. There is a morality system, but it seems like it will be more nuanced than it was in the older trilogy. “We’ve chosen to anchor this around the actions you do, and specifically the things you do in Albion that are witnessed by at least one other person,” according to director Ralph Fulton. It also seems like it could be pretty funny, and yes, you will be able to kick chickens. This new Fable has been a long time coming. The first game in the series debuted in 2004, and Xbox and Playground Games announced this new title, referred to as a “new beginning,” during Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox Games Showcase. While Microsoft did show new trailers for the game in 2023 and 2024, it was delayed from its planned 2025 release to this year.Follow topics and authors from this story to see more like this in your personalized homepage feed and to receive email updates.Jay PetersCloseJay PetersSenior ReporterPosts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All by Jay PetersEntertainmentCloseEntertainmentPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All EntertainmentGamingCloseGamingPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All GamingNewsCloseNewsPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All NewsXboxCloseXboxPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All XboxMore in: Xbox Developer Direct 2026: the biggest games and announcementsBig games are getting bigger, Xbox edition.Jay PetersAn hour agoHere’s a new look at Beast of Reincarnation, from the team behind PokémonAndrew Webster6:55 PM UTCThe dog days of summer.Andrew Webster6:46 PM UTCMost PopularMost PopularClaude Code is suddenly everywhere inside MicrosoftWhat a Sony and TCL partnership means for the future of TVsSony announces its first turntables in yearsEveryone can hear your TV in their headphones using this transmitterHow much can a city take? The Verge DailyA free daily digest of the news that matters most.Email (required)Sign UpBy submitting your email, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Notice. The Verge has announced that the long-awaited Fable reboot is set to launch this fall, initially slated for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. This new iteration, developed by Playground Games (known for the *Forza* franchise), represents a significant departure while honoring the core identity of the beloved RPG series. The game is being described as an open-world action RPG, offering players extensive customization options for their characters and combat skills. Beyond combat, a key element of the experience revolves around building and managing estates – players can construct multiple homes and establish relationships with the inhabitants of Albion. A central mechanic of the game is a nuanced morality system that responds directly to player actions. Unlike previous *Fable* titles, this system is predicated on observable actions witnessed by other characters. The director, Ralph Fulton, emphasizes a shift away from simplistic “good” and “evil” choices, highlighting instead a reactive system where your behavior within Albion has tangible consequences, affecting your reputation and relationships. This creates a dynamic environment where player choices actively shape the narrative and the responses of those around them. The game is deliberately aiming for a sense of humor, as evidenced by the inclusion of seemingly trivial actions such as kicking chickens. The development of *Fable* has been a lengthy process, marked by initial announcements in 2020 during the Xbox Games Showcase and subsequent trailer releases in 2023 and 2024. Despite these showings, the launch date was pushed back from the originally planned 2025 release to this fall. Playground Games’ involvement represents a fascinating collaboration, combining their expertise in open-world design with the established lore and fanbase of *Fable*. The core gameplay loop is designed to be deeply engaging, encouraging players to invest time and resources into establishing their estates, developing relationships with villagers, and navigating the consequences of their actions. This departure from a predominantly linear narrative, coupled with a reactive morality system, suggests a more player-driven experience than previous installments. The game’s focus on Albion, its inhabitants, and the intricacies of player-driven outcomes signals a bold new direction for the *Fable* franchise. |
