There are several great e-readers available at prices lower than you'd usually find them. From Amazon's older Kindle Scribe (which remains my personal favorite of the Scribe line) and colorful Colorsoft models to Kobo's Libra Colour, my all-around favorite e-reader, there are plenty of options at decent discounts. It's the perfect time to get ahead on Mother's Day and Father's Day shopping, find a gift for your favorite graduate-to-be, or just grab a new e-reader for yourself if you're tired of reading Libby books on your iPhone, like I was. Switching to a Kindle (and a Kindle holder) gave my wrists and eyes more joy than you could ever guess. Here are the best e-reader deals I spotted during Amazon's Big Spring Sale, as WIRED's resident e-reader reviewer.Best E-Reader DealsPhotograph: Nena FarrellVideo: Nena FarrellCourtesy of KoboChevronChevronSave to wishlistSave to wishlistKoboLibra Colour$230 $200 (13% off) Kobo$300 $270 (10% off) Kobo (With Stylus)$250 $210 (16% off) AmazonThis powerful little e-reader is my overall favorite, with a color screen, page-turning buttons, and a stylus you can buy separately to transform it into a digital notebook. It's easy to annotate on the pages themselves, too, and color-code your highlights. It's often on sale for this same $30 off, but still worth snagging at this price.Photograph: Nena FarrellPhotograph: Nena FarrellCourtesy of AmazonVideo: Nena FarrellChevronChevronSave to wishlistSave to wishlistAmazonKindle Scribe (2nd Gen, 2024)$400 $250 (38% off) Amazon (16 GB)$400 $250 (38% off) Best Buy (16 GB)This is the older Kindle Scribe, but the price and features are the best you'll get, especially when it's on sale like this. I still reach for this model even though I have the newer third generation, and keep in mind the second generation will also get some of the newer software and experiences over time. With the sale, it's half the price of the newer model.Photograph: Nena FarrellPhotograph: Nena FarrellCourtesy of AmazonChevronChevronSave to wishlistSave to wishlistAmazonKindle Colorsoft and Colorsoft Signature Edition$280 $230 (18% off) Amazon (Colorsoft Signature Edition)$250 $170 (32% off) Amazon (Colorsoft)If you're already a Kindle reader and looking to upgrade, it's likely because you want a new feature like a color screen. While the Kobo above is the better buy, if you want to stay in the Kindle ecosystem but add some color to your books, both the Colorsoft and Colorsoft Signature are on sale.Photograph: Nena FarrellCourtesy of AmazonChevronChevronSave to wishlistSave to wishlistAmazonKindle (2024, 11th Gen)$110 $95 (14% off) AmazonIf you're looking to spend as little as possible, the basic Kindle (11th generation) is still a great e-reader and is currently under $100. It can do almost everything the other Kindles can (except the Scribe) on a snappy black-and-white screen. It doesn't have a warm front light either, but it's still a great purchase for the price.Power up with unlimited access to WIRED. Amazon’s Spring Sale presents a compelling opportunity for consumers to acquire a range of e-readers at discounted prices, as highlighted by Nena Farrell’s analysis for WIRED. The sale encompasses several prominent models from both Kindle and Kobo, offering a diverse selection catering to varying needs and budgets. Farrell’s assessment centers around the Kobo Libra Colour and its accompanying Kobo (with stylus) and Kindle Scribe, alongside the standard Kindle models and the Colorsoft line. The overarching theme of Farrell’s reporting is the availability of these devices at significantly reduced costs, creating a favorable environment for purchasing upgrades or introducing new users to the benefits of e-reading, particularly referencing experiences with Libby and the reduction of wrist and eye strain. Specifically, the Kobo Libra Colour is identified as Farrell’s overall favorite, owing to its color screen, page-turning buttons, and incorporation of a stylus – a feature that allows for the transformation of the device into a digital notebook facilitating annotation and color-coded highlighting directly on the book pages. The sale price of $230 for the Libra Colour, frequently discounted to $200, is emphasized, while the Kobo (with stylus) is offered at $270, representing a 10% discount. The Kindle Scribe is presented as a particularly attractive option, especially when considering the older second generation model, which is available for $250, representing a 38% reduction in price compared to the newest iteration. This availability allows access to newer software experiences over time. The Colorsoft and Colorsoft Signature Edition Kindles are presented as alternatives for existing Kindle users seeking to incorporate color displays into their reading experience, with discounts reaching 18% and 32% respectively. Finally, the basic Kindle (11th generation) is positioned as a budget-friendly option, retaining a price of $95, providing a functional e-reading experience without advanced features like a warm front light. Farrell’s recommendation is largely driven by the perceived value offered during the Spring Sale, making it a strategic moment for acquiring e-readers. The report emphasizes the availability of these devices at prices lower than usual, suitable for gifting occasions like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, or simply to address a desire for a new e-reader experience. The detailed assessment highlights the range of features available across the different models, allowing the reader to make an informed decision based on individual preferences and requirements. |
