In an announcement on Friday, Sony says that the standard PS5 will now cost $649.99, up from $549.99. Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition now costs $599.99 instead of $499.99, and the PlayStation 5 Pro will cost $899.99 instead of $749.99.Along with these changes, Sony is increasing the price of its PlayStation Portal as well, going from $199.99 to $249.99.This is the second time in less than a year that Sony has raised the price of its PS5 consoles, as the company hiked prices by $50 for all three models last August. Sony cites “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” as the reason for the price hike. “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,” Sony says. Here are the price increases going into effect in other regions:UKPS5: £569.99PS5 Digital Edition: £519.99PS5 Pro: £789.99PlayStation Portal: £219.99EuropePS5: €649.99PS5 Digital Edition: €599.99PS5 Pro: €899.99PlayStation Portal: €249.99JapanPS5: ¥97,980PS5 Digital Edition: ¥89,980PS5 Pro: ¥137,980PlayStation Portal: ¥39,980Sony isn’t the only console maker that has raised prices in recent months. Last year, Microsoft bumped the prices of its Xbox Series X / S consoles, Xbox controllers, and some new games. Nintendo also raised the price of its original Switch from $299 to $339 after President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs. Next month, the Kinect-like Nex Playground will get a $50 price hike as well. The rising cost of RAM may also have an impact on future consoles, too, with a recent report from Bloomberg saying that Sony is considering delaying the release of the next-gen PlayStation to 2028 or 2029.Follow topics and authors from this story to see more like this in your personalized homepage feed and to receive email updates.Emma RothCloseEmma RothNews WriterPosts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All by Emma RothGamingCloseGamingPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All GamingNewsCloseNewsPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All NewsPlayStationClosePlayStationPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All PlayStationSonyCloseSonyPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All SonyTechCloseTechPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All TechMost PopularMost PopularMeta gets ready to launch two new Ray-Ban AI glassesThe United States router ban, explainedNetflix is raising prices againSony is raising PS5 prices by $100 in AprilApple’s Mac Pro is dead, apparently for good this timeThe Verge DailyA free daily digest of the news that matters most.Email (required)Sign UpBy submitting your email, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Notice. Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation 5 console lineup, effective April 2nd, 2026. The standard PS5 will see a $100 price hike, rising from $549.99 to $649.99. Similarly, the PS5 Digital Edition will increase from $499.99 to $599.99. Notably, the high-end PS5 Pro will also experience a price jump, moving from $749.99 to $899.99. This price adjustment also extends to other Sony hardware, including the PlayStation Portal, which is increasing in price from $199.99 to $249.99 across various global markets. This price increase reflects “continued pressures in the global economic landscape,” as stated by Sony, and represents a second price hike for the PS5 within the last year following a $50 increase in August 2025. The company’s rationale centers on maintaining the ability to deliver “innovative, high-quality gaming experiences.” This action follows similar price increases implemented by Microsoft for its Xbox Series X/S consoles and Nintendo for the original Switch, and indications point to potential further price increases within the gaming hardware sector, possibly impacted by rising RAM costs and potential delays in the next-generation PlayStation’s release, as suggested by recent reports. The increase primarily affects the United Kingdom (PS5: £569.99, PS5 Digital Edition: £519.99, PS5 Pro: £789.99; PlayStation Portal: £219.99), Europe (PS5: €649.99, PS5 Digital Edition: €599.99, PS5 Pro: €899.99; PlayStation Portal: €249.99), Japan (PS5: ¥97,980, PS5 Digital Edition: ¥89,980, PS5 Pro: ¥137,980; PlayStation Portal: ¥39,980), and the United States (Prices vary by retailer and region). The decision follows a trend within the gaming industry regarding increased hardware costs potentially driven by material expenses and technological advancements. |
