Critics argue that the data center advanced with numerous unanswered questions concerning water usage, energy costs, financial arrangements, and transparency. A central argument is that the project’s economics are fundamentally questionable, highlighting the disparity between the special tax incentives granted to massive corporations and the obligation for Box Elder residents and businesses to bear their fair share of costs.

Furthermore, significant environmental and resource concerns have been raised. The data center is receiving water permits while local farmers and residents are simultaneously being urged to conserve water, creating an unsustainable situation in a region already contending with drought and water stress. This raises serious questions about justifying the additional, massive industrial water demand in the area. Process and local control are also critical areas of contention; Box Elder residents were reportedly excluded entirely from the decision-making process by the County or MIDA regarding the project’s approval. The movement demands that billion-dollar facilities not be approved without rigorous, transparent public review and clear, comprehensive answers.

Ultimately, the effort spearheaded by B.E.A.R. seeks to restore accountability by ensuring that Box Elder voters have a genuine opportunity to weigh the consequences before irreversible decisions are finalized. This advocacy includes promoting the Box Elder Referendum 26-11 and 26-12 efforts to prevent the construction of the Stratos-MIDA AI Data Center in Box Elder County, emphasizing the principle that community voice is essential when assessing large-scale industrial development.
