Automated pentesting tools deliver real value, but they were built to answer one question: can an attacker move through the network? They were not built to test whether your controls block threats, your detection rules fire, or your cloud configs hold. This guide covers the 6 surfaces you actually need to validate. Anthropic is preparing for the public release of the restricted Claude Mythos model, which was previously announced in April as a model with advanced capabilities in computer security tasks. Anthropic indicated that the Mythos model demonstrates significant improvements in code reasoning and autonomy, surpassing even their flagship Opus 4.7 model. This advancement is particularly noted because the model has shown the ability to automatically develop functional cyberattacks at a highly professional level, raising concerns regarding the potential risks to global digital infrastructure. Anthropic cautioned that the advantage derived from these tools would likely belong to those who can utilize them most effectively, suggesting a potential short-term risk that attackers could leverage these systems, while emphasizing a long-term goal of using these models to improve defensive measures. To mitigate these severe risks, Anthropic decided against the immediate public rollout of Mythos until a robust guardrail system was established. Evidence suggests that such a system is being developed, as references to the Mythos model are now present in Claude Code and Claude Security, and some users briefly observed an option to enable Mythos in the public version of Claude Code before it was taken offline. The model is internally designated as claude-mythos-1-preview and also briefly appeared in Claude Security. Furthermore, Anthropic is actively engaged in securing software against AI-driven exploits through a new initiative named Glasswing. This project involves collaboration with other companies to protect the world's most critical software from such vulnerabilities, utilizing the unreleased Claude Mythos Preview. This collaborative effort has already engaged up to fifty organizational partners. The utility of the Mythos Preview was demonstrated when Anthropic presented a dashboard displaying open-source vulnerabilities, indicating that the model alone managed to uncover ten thousand high- or critical-severity vulnerabilities within its first month, which served as the basis for the decision to delay the public release. Anthropic currently offers various models, including Claude Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, Opus 4.5, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 5.5. The context surrounding these developments highlights the ongoing tension between advancing artificial intelligence capabilities and ensuring the security of the software ecosystem. |
