Modern Warfare 4, which is developed by Infinity Ward, will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X / S, PC — and it will also be the first Call of Duty title to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 following a 10-year deal Microsoft reached with Nintendo as it worked to complete the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Also notable: Modern Warfare 4 won’t be available on PS4 or Xbox One. Those last-gen platforms have gotten Call of Duty releases since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts, but Activision is finally moving on.Here’s the setup for the game, according to Activision:War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. A young squad of South Korean soldiers fight to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price’s off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone’s control.Activision says Modern Warfare 4 is “built natively for current-generation consoles and PC,” which will enable “greater scale, density, responsiveness, and consistency across every mode.” For PC players, Activision is promising that the game is built “with a renewed focus,” including features like “PC-specific performance optimizations,” “multiple” options for upscaling and frame generation, and “extended graphics options.”Call of Duty: Warzone is also being wound down on PS4 and Xbox One. Starting June 4th, new downloads of the game on PS4 and Xbox One won’t be allowed anymore, and on June 25th, the in-game store will be removed on those platforms. Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will stop being playable starting with Season 1 for Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone, which kicks off “shortly after” the October 23rd launch.Follow topics and authors from this story to see more like this in your personalized homepage feed and to receive email updates.Jay PetersCloseJay PetersSenior ReporterPosts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All by Jay PetersEntertainmentCloseEntertainmentPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All EntertainmentGamingCloseGamingPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All GamingNewsCloseNewsPosts from this topic will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.FollowFollowSee All NewsMost PopularMost PopularValve raises Steam Deck prices by more than $200Sony’s first RGB TV is a statement pieceThe golden age of handheld gaming is already overSony is offering up to 50 percent off some of our favorite PS5 gamesHere’s how Google is responding to Fitbit users who don’t like the new Health appThe Verge DailyA free daily digest of the news that matters most.Email (required)Sign UpBy submitting your email, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Notice. Activision has officially announced the release details for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, specifying a launch date of October 23rd, 2026. The game is developed by Infinity Ward and will be accessible on current-generation platforms including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A significant development is that Modern Warfare 4 will be the first Call of Duty title to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, fulfilling a ten-year agreement Microsoft negotiated with Nintendo during the Activision Blizzard acquisition process. It is important to note that this new installment will not be released on the previous generation consoles, the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, marking a shift away from support for those systems in the franchise. The narrative premise of Modern Warfare 4 involves a large-scale conflict commencing on the Korean Peninsula, initiated by a full-scale invasion of North Korea, which poses a threat to global stability. The game centers on a narrative where a contingent of South Korean soldiers must fight to survive amidst collapsing front lines, while concurrently, Captain Price engages in a personal, shadow war to counteract the forces behind the invasion. Activision states that the game is engineered to be natively built for current-generation consoles and PC, which is intended to facilitate superior scale, density, responsiveness, and consistency across all gameplay modes. For PC players, Activision promises specialized enhancements, including PC-specific performance optimizations, multiple options for upscaling and frame generation, and extended graphics settings to maximize player experience. In conjunction with the new release, Activision is managing the lifecycle of Call of Duty: Warzone across legacy consoles. The game is scheduled for winding down on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Specifically, new downloads for Warzone will cease on June 4th, and the in-game store on these consoles will be removed by June 25th. Furthermore, Warzone will cease to be playable with Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, which immediately follows the game's launch date. This transition indicates a strategic focus on migrating the franchise experience to newer hardware and ensuring the core multiplayer and campaign offerings are optimized for current-generation systems. |
