Separate The Cord From The Device

Notice how your printer's power cable can be detached from the printer. Notice that you can remove the power cable from your computer — be it a laptop or a desktop or a tower. Why shouldn't this same modular principle be applied across the board to everything electrical? Why should I have to fuss and fool around with keeping the cord out of my way when I clean my microwave or toaster oven? For that matter, coffee bean grinders and kitchen mixers etc.Why should I have to reach behind all the stuff on my kitchen counter to unplug these appliances when it would be so much easier to detach their power cables?

JImMay 27, 2026 at 8:27 AMNot really sure Joe, but perhaps it has to do with, planned obsolescence... ;) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescenceReplyDeleteRepliesReplyAnonymousMay 27, 2026 at 9:25 AMThey would get lost. And manufacturers would start sending the cord without the actual PLUG, as they do now with electronics, so you'd be playing hide and seek to find the cord AND a brick to connect to the outlet.ReplyDeleteRepliesReplyAnonymousMay 27, 2026 at 4:34 PMantares FWIW I think you have a good idea, Joe. Yeah, it has inconveniences associated with it, but the current implementation has inconveniences, too. You pays your money, you takes your choice. If you have a choice. The author of the post prompts reflection on the design of electrical devices by focusing on the detachment of power cables from the main appliance. The central inquiry revolves around why this modular principle, demonstrated by a printer’s detachable power cable, is not universally applied across all electrical goods, such as kitchen appliances like microwaves, toasters, coffee bean grinders, and mixers. The author questions the necessity of the inconvenience associated with managing power cords when unplugging these devices, suggesting that detaching the power source would be a simpler, more practical approach.

The discussion surrounding this idea introduces related concepts concerning modern manufacturing practices, specifically mentioning planned obsolescence. Commenters noted that current implementations, while perhaps inconvenient, reflect a choice made by the consumer. However, other participants raised concerns regarding the added cost of incorporating extra plugs and sockets, suggesting that the expense of these additions cannot be ignored. The conversation touches upon the trade-offs inherent in product design, balancing functional convenience against manufacturing and consumer costs. Furthermore, the commentary acknowledges that current methods of electrical device design involve manufacturers supplying cords without the actual plug, creating additional complexity for the user in locating both the cord and the necessary connection point.
