The Society for the Exploration of Confidential Repetitive Envelope Tints, known as S.E.C.R.E.T., was established to foster a community among collectors interested in the artistry of obscuring printed information within security envelopes. The society aims to connect members and create the first standardized collection of security envelope patterns, celebrating the craft of secrecy through a playful taxonomy. This group formally adopts the term Obscurationists to acknowledge and celebrate the study, appreciation, and documentation of the visual patterns intended to conceal content in these envelopes. The organization engages with the historical context of windowed envelopes, noting that despite their existence since 1901, very little is publicly known about the origins of the intricate patterns concealed within them, highlighting a quiet mystery surrounding this subject. The archive organizes the collected patterns through a structured classification system. Patterns are categorized by order, such as Abstract, Geometric, and Iconic, and further divided by family, encompassing groups like Dynamic, Organic, Repetitive, Representational, and Woven. The genus level classification includes categories such as Basketweave, Camouflage, Circles, Confetti, Cryptic, Decorative, Diamonds, Dots, Emblematic, Illustrative, Lines, Mesh, Noise, Squares, Plaid, Triangles, Woodgrain, and ZigZags. Finally, these patterns are further specified by species, organized by colors including Black, Blue, Brown, Green, Grey, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, Turquoise, and Yellow. This comprehensive system allows for the systematic exploration and documentation of the visual intricacies found in these envelope designs. |
