They also have heart rate sensors built into each earbud, meaning you can start and track a workout and get accurate, detailed stats without wearing a fitness tracker. The frequency of a wave (the number of times it oscillates per second) determines the pitch. We perceive low-frequency waves, like from an airplane rumble, as dull, bassy sound. We hear high-frequency waves, like a police siren, as a sharp, treble sound.ANC uses microphones to hear incoming waves and generate the polar opposite waveform. When you add opposite waveforms together, they cancel each other out, and it's as if there is no sound wave at all, at least to our ears.It isn't perfect because many sounds surround us at the same time—some constant, like the hum of an AC, while others are varied and sudden, like the human voice.
