Opinion
Written & Illustrated by Avery RobinsonIntroduction by Andrew Fairclough
Just about every distressed texture in your modern digital library owes its aesthetics to the glitchiness and unreliability of the cheap physical printing technologies that were the norm long before the design world moved to digital production. There are few better examples of these glitchy aesthetics being embraced than in Heavy Metal. Avery Robinson's obsession with Heavy Metal's visual language has taken him deep down the rabbit hole of metal logo's and photocopied flyers. Here he traces toner grit and cheap copy paper back to their origins, revealing why they continue to outlive the limitations that created them.
Before I spent my free time obsessively researching the design language of niche heavy metal subgenres, I played soccer. Not professionally or anything, just some local leagues and school clubs. One time our high school soccer coach lost his absolute shit on our team mid-game. A full squad berating at max volume. Spittle flying, veins popping, clipboard smashing. The reason for his frustration: our jerseys were too clean. Coach Tiago wanted to see some grass stains. He wanted slide tackles, body checks, dirt streaks and torn cloth. He wanted blood. Dirt and textures carry evidence of a battle well fought.
Ready??? Break! Our team went on to lose the game. But I understand where Coach was coming from. Imagine if we walked off that pitch caked in dirt and blood. Heads held high, jerseys ruined, front teeth missing. Even if we lost, we gave 'em hell. The battle-worn “distressed aesthetic” carries a certain weight. It elevates objects from the ordinary to the sacred. Favorite t-shirts are faded and cracked. Tour relic’d guitars have worn wood and chipped paint. Some fans even have lucky jerseys that they can never wash because of the magic ingrained in those polyester fibers. It shows survival. It shows character. It shows history. It shows love.
Flyers don't die; they multiply.
Heavy metal graphics embrace the same philosophy. Logos, packaging, and flyers look like they’ve been to hell and back. The symbolism behind the distressed aesthetic is obvious: it makes the graphics feel powerful, ancient, and battle-tested. The journey to achieve this effect is less obvious. Distressed textures weren’t always an intentional design choice, they were an economic necessity born out of the underground tape trading circuit, dive bar promo flyers, and endless photocopies. Low-budget production methods created an epic asset library of scratches, grains, toner streaks, and torn edges …artifacts of how underground music survived before the internet.
"Modern designers don’t add these textures just because they look cool. They add them because they carry the history of the scene."
A case of the Mondays.
Part I. The Dark Ages
Metal emerged in the late 70s and early 80s. No Photoshop. No social media. No email. No way to tell people your hairy thrash band exists unless you’re resourceful and ready to do it yourself. Record stores, tape trading circuits, mailing lists, zines, and cheap flyers formed the backbone of the metal underground communication network. And every artifact within the scene had to survive repeat copying. The distribution pipeline for an underground demo tape could start with a band’s single master recording. First generation tape copies go to local fans. Local fans make copies to send to pen pals. Pen pals make copies for their local scenes. A record store picks up a third generation copy and sells it to 5 more people. One of these fans runs an underground metal zine out of his mom’s basement and distributes 10 copies to his readers. Each subsequent generation sacrificed a little fidelity in exchange for reaching another listener.
How many copies can you make before the tape is unlistenable?
Printed graphics follow the same logic. An original death metal illustration would get photocopied, ripped apart, glued to a new page, written on, photocopied, cut to pieces, crossed out, rearranged, and photocopied again. Dull scissors, dry markers, and cheap paper all contributed to the aesthetic along the way. More copies meant more grain, dust, blown highlights, and crushed blacks. The limitations of the medium influenced the design language of an entire genre. Key players building the metal underground weren’t professional designers. They were nerds with staplers. By the late 70s, copy shops are everywhere. Kids, collectors, and obsessive metal fans begin compiling reviews, band interviews, and scene reports for worldwide distribution.

Enter the zine. The ultimate in DIY information propagation. Essential zine reading includes Slayer Magazine, Kick Ass Monthly, Metal Forces, and dozens of regional publications. This press helped define and spread the sick twisted music that would become thrash, grind, NWOBHM, black metal, death metal, doom, and beyond.
A zine about choosing the best heavy metal guitar to survive the zombie apocalypse. Digital version here for my fellow guitar hoarders.
Part II. Photocopied to Death The grainy distressed look of early metal graphics looks great for a reason. It’s not just the sense of history you get from flipping through a Slayer mag or browsing vintage Morbid Angel tees. Or the fond memories of push pits past when gazing at a show flyer that somehow survived the entire set crumpled in your back pocket. These graphics look distinct because photocopy machines destroy gradients and exaggerate contrast. Misalignment creates ghost images, scanners add random noise, wear and tear happens naturally in the design process rather than getting slapped on at the end. Designers had to learn how to work within these parameters and create graphics built for survival.
Striking high-contrast designs become a staple of the genre. The heavy metal aesthetic prioritizes atmosphere over legibility. Having a copy machine that unintentionally destroys your promo graphics as you make them is lowkey perfect.
Embrace your destiny.
Part III. Analog Ghosts
The sounds of heavy metal evolve alongside new production technology in the 90s and 2000s. Desktop publishing gradually grows, but the internet connection is still mad slow. Promotion depends on physical flyers, record stores, and local scenes. Just like the old days. Except now there’s new tools, textures, and digital art floating around waiting to be printed, scanned, and mutilated in a pirated copy of Photoshop 5. Things move fully online in the mid-2000s. Instead of designing 11x17” show posters, people are making MySpace headers, forum signatures, and snapping low-res selfies for their profile avatars. A new generation of bands grows up as digital natives and starts recreating distressed textures, torn edges, and ink splatters with digital tools. The logos and merch designs of Suicide Silence, Carnifex, Bring Me The Horizon, The Devil Wears Prada, and Job For A Cowboy are peak examples.

Design tools are ready to meet the demand for distortion in the newly formed digital landscape. Software gets cheaper, piracy becomes common, and brush packs become the new currency for authentic heavy metal graphics. Companies like True Grit eliminated the trip to Kinko’s for scary accurate grain textures. Everything from Procreate to MS Paint is on the table. You can doodle an evil skull, snap a photo with your phone, and have a realistic halftone effect applied in seconds. In 2026, designers have unlimited options to create with. And yet, the gritty, photocopied high-contrast heavy metal look remains.
Give me grit or give me death! Making use of various True Grit digital tools to capture the ghost of Kinko's past.
Textures Will Never Die
Have true heavy metal graphics been replaced by cheap digital knockoffs? Does downloading a weathered wheat paste png have the same impact as an overworked Xerox 1045 churning out 1980s thrash flyers?
"I believe these graphic treatments survived 50 years of technological change for a reason."
A poster filled with grit and grain signals authenticity, craft, and intention. Yes, it can be overdone, abused, or taken out of context. But the most important aspect of design will never be the tools and textures. It will be the strength of the message. This is why heavy metal has the best graphics of any music genre. The paper tears, toner smears, and visual noise reinforce an identity of soul-crushing sonic chaos. Adjustment layers and halftone plugins don’t appear at random in metal. They appear to reinforce a decades-long tradition of artistic expression no matter the limitations. And if you need more convincing, remember coach Tiago’s motivational pep talk. Go out on the field of battle (or soccer pitch). Play hard. And get dirty.
Avery Robinson is a Creative Director and the creator of Metal Logos, an ongoing visual archive exploring the design language of heavy metal. His work examines typography, album art, brand building, and underground culture through the lens of graphic design.

The aesthetic of distressed textures stems from the limitations and "glitchiness" inherent in early, cheap physical printing technologies, a concept explored by Avery Robinson, who traces the visual language of heavy metal aesthetics back to the origins of photocopied flyers and toner grit. Robinson suggests that the distressed aesthetic carries significant weight, as it reflects survival, character, history, and emotion, elevating ordinary objects by showcasing a battle-worn quality, similar to how the journey of underground music was communicated through low-fidelity means. This visual philosophy is rooted in the economic necessities of the underground scene, where low-budget methods like tape trading and photocopying generated an accidental library of artifacts such as grain and noise, which ultimately became ingrained in the genre's identity.
The genesis of this aesthetic lies in the distribution pipeline of underground media, where repeated copying inevitably introduced imperfections. For music, early distribution relied on successive copies of tapes and flyers, each iteration sacrificing fidelity to ensure wider reach. Similarly, printed graphics were subjected to the physical degradation of cheap paper and dull tools, resulting in visible flaws like grain, dust, and crushed blacks. This process meant that the limitations of the medium dictated the visual language of the entire genre, as designers learned to create graphics built for survival, prioritizing atmosphere over strict legibility through high-contrast design, mimicking the accident of the photocopy machine in creating ghost images and noise.
As technology advanced, the trend continued, moving from physical artifacts to digital creation. In the 90s and 2000s, as desktop publishing and the internet emerged, a new generation of digital natives began recreating these distressed textures using digital tools. Modern bands and artists now digitally replicate torn edges, ink splatters, and grunge effects, demonstrating that the appeal of these textures is not merely a stylistic choice but a reflection of a long-standing tradition of artistic expression. The argument is extended to contemporary design, asserting that these textures carry the history of the scene, implying that the pursuit of authentic, gritty visuals reinforces the identity of the content, rather than being an arbitrary choice of design tools.
The provided licensing documentation for True Grit Texture Supply further delineates the terms governing the use of these Graphic Assets, including textures and fonts. The guidelines establish that use can be both commercial and non-commercial, permitting applications across various media, including physical end-products like apparel and packaging, digital publications, social media content, and advertisements. The license permits unlimited use for creating various design works and stock illustrations, subject to specific limits on physical unit production, such as up to 250,000 units for physical items and packaging.
Strict prohibitions exist against resale, distribution, or sub-licensing of the source files in any form, reverse-engineering, or the creation of personalized create-on-demand services. The license explicitly prohibits embedding editable source files or templates into end products, and prohibits the use of the graphic assets in training artificial intelligence systems or for generating content that is illegal, harassing, fraudulent, or defamatory. Furthermore, the use of texture images as the sole design element on products for sale is restricted.
Regarding the fonts, the license allows for use in creating printed and digital designs, branding, and publications, with specific limitations on embedding text in documents to prevent editing by recipients. Webfonts can be embedded using the font-face selector on websites, but there are restrictions on pageview limits for website use. The agreement emphasizes that the graphic assets and fonts remain the intellectual property of the designer, and the license is granted only as a limited, non-exclusive right to use, with strict liability and indemnity clauses in place for the Licensee. |
