The Dream Devourer is a special optional boss encountered in the Chrono Trigger series, specifically in the DS version and subsequent iterations, situated in the Darkness At The End Of Time. Lore suggests that the Dream Devourer represents an intermediary evolutionary stage for Schala and Lavos, who developed the ability to consume thoughts, memories, and dreams across time. Magus attempted to free Schala but failed, resulting in Schala advising him to abandon his efforts, a decision Magus ultimately felt compelled to make. The boss battle involves a two-phase strategy. In the initial phase, the Dream Devourer counters physical attacks by employing Mana Reaper, which drains MP from a party member. Players are advised to counter this by utilizing potent magical attacks such as Luminaire, Flare, and Electrocute, or by employing double techniques like Antipode Bomb III for effective damage. It is recommended to rapidly complete this phase as the boss gains the ability to void status immunity. Upon performing an action mimicking the raising of the Lavos Core's defense, the boss transitions into the second phase. During the second phase, the Dream Devourer absorbs all elemental attacks and counters them with Chaos Zone, which inflicts confusion upon the party. To successfully engage this phase, the party must rely on non-magical techniques, including Cleave, Frenzy, and Triple Kick, while ensuring all members possess status-immunity equipment to mitigate the effect of Chaos Zone. Maintaining high party health is crucial because Chaos Zone can inflict significant damage, and players should aim to either defeat the boss quickly or maximize their defenses, as powerful abilities like Phantasm and The End of All and Nothing can inflict substantial damage, potentially killing party members instantaneously. Alternatively, utilizing the triple technique Lifeline is effective for mitigating potential devastating damage. For optimal damage output, specific combinations are advised. Completing the Dimensional Vortex using Robo equipped with the Apocalypse Arm and Dragon's Tear can inflict 9999 damage, allowing the boss to be defeated in three or four turns. If the party is overleveled, Ayla at level 96 can achieve this same effect. Furthermore, due to the boss's high health pool, which approaches the signed 16-bit integer limit (32000 HP), a unique healing strategy exists. By using powerful magic during the second phase, it is possible to temporarily heal the boss past 32767 HP, causing the health counter to overflow and register a negative value. |
